Digital Candle
I know that top image looks really boring, and it is, but it wouldn’t be so bad if you were running this week’s app on your machine. Lighting was the topic this week, so I made a candle simulator. I have been a little obsessed with modeling candle flames since last semester and FireLight, so I figured I would give it a try in openGL.
This app randomly generates a 30 second loop of candle flicker. It was tricky writing an algorithm that would pseudo-faithfully recreate such an organic system as a candle’s flicker, but I think it came out realistic… the movement at least.
Check it out!

This post reminded me to look into the completed FireLight project. Very impressive. The wooden object is surprisingly elegant. The mirrored flicker is shocking. These trans-modal relationships remind me of Teleporting an Unknown State by Eduardo Kac:

Looking forward to your thesis work.
